Mediterranean Cheese and Wine - ENJOY It's from Europe

Campaign

The action is an initiative of two Greek historic Unions of Cooperatives from the islands of Samos and Naxos and the most significant agri-food sector body of Emilia Romagna region in Italy, representing cheese and wines under the Quality Schemes of PDO and PGI.

The action will highlight the authenticity of the products and its mission is to enhance the competitiveness of the specific PDO and PGI products by increasing the recognition of PDO and PGI logos through improvement of perception and knowledge of consumers about the products and of Union's Quality schemes in general. The action targets four markets of great importance for the products and the Quality schemes; France, Germany, Greece and Italy.

Beneficiaries

The action unifies three representative organizations from two Members States (Greece and Italy).

Project Coordinator is the Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Naxos. The Agricultural Cooperatives Union of Naxos S.A. (EAS Naxos) was founded in 1926 by a small group of producers of the island in support of rural activities and cheese making with small quantities of milk. Since then, it evolved rapidly increasing both, production and products and constantly improving quality. In 2014 EAS Naxos was transformed into a Rural Partnership - Societe Anonyme, based initially on the 12 primary agricultural cooperatives, who are also the Shareholders of the Company.
The experience and the passion of its people have made company's products famous throughout Greece. Today there is a sophisticated dairy industry, which is the largest in the Cyclades and is exclusively producing traditional products.

  • Naxos Graviera PDO
  • Graviera from sheep milk
  • Other traditional cheeses
  • Fresh butter (Fresh)
  • Cream
  • Fresh pasteurized milk
The excellent quality of products that are made combining traditional methods and modern equipment, have established the company in consumer preferences. The goal and everyday mission is:
  • The rigorous selection of milk
  • The exhaustive quality control
  • The best hygiene
Naxos has a lot of livestock farming, but also agriculture. About 4,000 dairy cattle, 6,000 cattle for fattening and over 120,000 sheep and goats are bred on the island. Most farmers and livestock farmers are members of the Union, who market their products through EAS Naxos and source all the raw materials they need from the Union.
Production of Graviera Naxos is about 1000 tons annually with the vast majority of the product consumed in the national market. The production is carried out according to ISO 22000: 2005, ISO 9001: 2008 and AGROCERT standards, with a state-of-the-art Laboratory, fully equipped, in compliance with all Food and Hygiene Standards, to check on a daily basis the raw material, safe cheese making, the maintenance of the cheese products produced, as well as the provision of information to the producers on Food Hygiene and Safety.

Agricultural Cooperatives Union of Samos (EOS Samos) was founded in 1934 with the participation of 26 local cooperatives representing all of the wine growers on the island. From the outset, EOS was in a position to undertake the substantive task of protecting the rights of wine growers in their dealings with wine merchants, since it functions as a trade union. Since its foundation, EOS has been harvesting grapes and crafting wine in two wineries located in the areas of Malagari and Karlovassi, respectively. The Karlovassi winery serves the vineyards of the villages situated on the northern part of the island, while the Malagari winery, nestled a short distance from the town of Vathi, serves the rest of the island, while at the same time housing the Union's central offices. Visitors to the Malagari facilities may also enjoy a stroll around the Samos Wine Museum which opened its doors to the public in 2005 in one of the oldest parts of the winery.
Associated with document Ref. Ares(2018)6152806 - 30/11/2018 [826037-MCW] The vineyard of Samos is unique: 1,600 hectares of vines, rest comfortably on their terraced perches surrounded by the lush vegetation of this incredibly verdant island. The soil in these areas is deep, offering perfect drainage and forcing the roots of the vines to forage downward within the earth in pursuit of nutrition, producing perfect fruit which will produce the luscious and tasteful wines of Samos. In Samos, the white muscat grape reigns king covering about 97% of Samos’ vineyards, with the remaining 3% shared by ritino and fokiano - red grape varietals used for the production of rosé.
The EOS Samos is one of the oldest cooperatives in Greece and it is included in one of the biggest wineries nationally. Samos wine is one of the basic Greek wine ambassadors abroad, with exports all over the world. Nowadays, 2.200 producers participate in the Cooperative as members.
Since its founding, the EOS Samos receives the grapes and produces exquisite wines from WHITE MUSCAT in two modern wineries in Malagari (the capital of the island) and Karlovassi (the second biggest town) with a total capacity of 20.000 tons. The average annual production is approximately 50.000hl while exports constitute 70% of the production.

In the Union Quality signifies authenticity.
The partners represent some of the most typical product of their countries that are unique, authentic and come from regions where human activity for their production is balanced with nature and tradition. For this reason these products are part of Union's Quality System since 1990's.
At these regions - the inheriting tradition is so strong and well connected with the environment forming a sustainable relation that is a guide for the future. All these elements are part of the culture in the Mediterranean and these elements that we would like to communicate to the markets.
